The Smithsonian’s “Art of Video Games” Exhibition – Vote For Half-Life 2 Or Portal!

News & Rumors Other

“The Art of Video Games” is an exhibition that will debut in the Smithsonian Art Museum on the 16th of March of 2012, and end on the 30th of September of that year.

It will explore the “40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers.”

From the 14th of February (two days ago) through the 7th of April, 2011, you can vote for a maximum of 80 games from a pool of 240 proposed choices, divided by era, platform, and genre, to help select games that will be included in the exhibition.

Of course, we wouldn’t be writing about it if it didn’t have something to do with Valve’s games, and we’re pleased to say that yes, it does.

In the “Next Generation” category, on the “Modern Windows” platform, and in the Action Genre, you’ll find Half-Life 2 and Portal.

Both of them are in the same sub-category, so you’ll have to choose: HL2 or Portal?

The original Half-Life does not appear, which is strange. It’s not like there’s a “one game per series/franchise” rule, because you have CoD: Black Ops (VERY wise choice there, people) and CoD: World at War, and you have Halo Wars and Halo 3.

So yeah… that’s pretty odd. We wouldn’t have put Portal in the Action Genre either. We’d probably have put it in the Adventure Genre.

But, moving on, we hope you’ll be taking part in this. It’s a great cause, and there are some great games to choose from.

  1. Im going with Portal. Mainly because of the way Portal 2 is turning out, the stark contrasts of clean chambers and sloppy backrooms, the visual design is fantastic.

Actually, no. HL2 for the fantastic visuals of the Citadel.
