Since Portal 2′s release in April of last year, we’ve seen the release of a number of terrific fan-films: the poignant and clever “Outside Aperture“; the intriguing but lovely “Portal: No Escape“; and of course, the hilarious “Aperture: A Triumph of Science“. They serve as testaments to the community’s dedication, and appreciation for the world that Valve has so masterfully crafted. But every once in a while, one of those amazing projects comes around that’s just so promising, you can’t help but just be stunned. And this is one of them!

Oh, Beyond Black Mesa. You hyped us up so badly. But then you came out, and you weren’t quite what we expected from a Half-Life fanfilm. You messed with the canon and your story made little sense. But, at the end of the day, you delivered some great action scenes, and you had the courage to go beyond the boundaries of the established Half-Life continuum, proving that not every single Half-Life fanfilm had to be about a bunch of lowlife rebels during the Uprising.
And then we found out you might be getting a sequel. And we were hyped up, all over again. And then we- Wait, what? It’s out already?
Beyond Black Mesa. Most of us have already seen it. Released in January to mixed reactions, the fanfilm, despite its weak plot and flimsy fiction, featured some terrific production values and some impressive action. We weren’t sure if its creators, Infectious Designer, would ever return to the Half-Life continuum. But what’s this?
There’s been a number of TF2 fanfilms in the past. Generally, they aren’t quite as well done as the other fanfilms (Half-Life, first and foremost) we’ve seen in the community, but maybe that’s changed with the release of Sentry Sabotage!
And this is old. I know, I know.
Pretty impressive news week! We had Valve and TF’s 15th anniversaries, and the release of the long-awaited Part Two of the Escape from City 17 series. Sorry, guys!

Way back on the 12th of February 2009, two brothers created what remains, arguably, the greatest Half-Life fanfilm (or greatest Half-Life film, period) ever made. Escape From City 17: Part One went viral almost immediately after release, and inspired numerous other filmmakers to create their very own Half-Life fanfilms. Since then, the creators, the Purchase Brothers have been very busy with a number of projects, including a feature film. They released another teaser for Part Two and a recut of Part One in October of 2009, but since then, we’ve heard absolutely nothing from them.
Almost at number 50, and almost up to our… well, you’ll see soon enough!
Seems as though the Half-Life fanbase knows quite a bit about filmmaking, as we’ve seen a ton of homebrew live-action Half-Life short films. With a small budget and a fairly tiny crew, these dedicated filmmakers manage to bring the Half-Life universe to life, in… well, in real life.
And a new one is out! Meet “Half-Life: Singularity Collapse”.
