Valve Registers Mysterious “Gamer Life: The Movie” Domain Name, To Be Revealed On GameTrailers TV Tomorrow? [UPDATED]

News & Rumors Other

[UPDATE 2: It turns out that 10 months ago in September, Valve production crews were doing filming for an unidentified documentary focusing on “the life of professional gamers”. At that time, the documentary was in the early stages of development. Designed to promote e-sports, it allegedly focuses on 5 competitive gamers from all over the globe. No further detail was given at the time.

This might just be the supposed “Gamer Life” this article discusses. Stay tuned!]

[UPDATE: Stop the presses – for the GTTV reveal will literally be nothing we speculated about!

Exhibit A: this post on the official Source Filmmaker blog, showing a mocap artist holding an assault rifle not too dissimilar from CS:GO’s Bushmaster M4A4, while a developer uses the SFM in the background.

Exhibit B: this post on the official CS:GO blog, saying that: “if you like CS:GO and you like movies… you should check out GameTrailers TV tonight on Spike TV“.

Well then, an actual Counter-Strike movie? Consider me interested!]

This may be a tidbit, but it’s a very interesting one at that! Read on.

Valve Registers Mysterious “Gamer Life: The Movie” Domain Name, To Be Revealed On GameTrailers TV Tomorrow? [UPDATED]

It turns out that exactly one month ago, on the 13th of July, Valve registered two domain names: “gamerlifemovie.com” and “gamerlifethemovie.com”. Both domains were last updated one week ago, on the 8th of August.

Valve generally only registers domain names for projects related to their activities… so when they register a domain name, they plan on doing something with it. And this sounds very interesting indeed. They only registered these two, so it definitely seems as though this project is a film of some sort.

Now for the interesting part. This is the trailer for tomorrow’s Valve-centric episode of GameTrailers TV, in which Geoff Keighley will be covering CS:GO; Dota 2; Steam’s Big Picture Mode; TF2: Mann vs Machine; Gabe’s trip to Africa for shark diving… and revealing “the exclusive trailer for a new non-video game project in the works at Valve.”

You heard it here first, folks: Gamer Life: The Movie might just be the big non-game Valve project being revealed on GTTV tomorrow. In case you’re interested in watching it, the episode will air live on Spike TV tomorrow some time around 1AM Pacific time, and it should be uploaded to GT shortly after that. We’ll let you guys know when it pops up online.

And the rabbit hole might even go a little bit deeper than that. 4 months ago, back in April, Valve hired Ashly Burch, the creator of the comedy web series “Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'”, better known as “HAWP”. Apparently, she’s involved with “an unannounced Valve project“.

Now, it might sound like I’m grasping at straws here, but I’d reckon Ashly might just have something to do with this Gamer Life thing. Judging purely from the title, it certainly sounds like something she’d be tackling. And let’s not forget that she is a film director and a writer!

It also ties in neatly with the GameTrailers TV episode, seeing how HAWP is syndicated almost exclusively by GameTrailers itself, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ashly interviewed by Geoff as part of the episode.

In any case, whatever this Gamer Life thing is, I’m very interested in hearing more about it. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long!

Thanks to the community’s greatest detective: testinglol, for supplying the domain name info. Thanks to Lev for assistance with research into Ash’s work at Valve.

Copy and Paste the link (don’t click it) to open it. You see a fake steam-profile page which is then showing that the guy is playing “Half-Life 3 indev”. ( http://www.teamf6rtress.com/mvm/ )

How would someone know they would to a “typo” on the blog?

  4. Wow, a trailer for the 30th thing they’ve done since Episode Two which isn’t Half-Life.

It’s almost like I can hardly wait.

    Almost.

  5. I’ve been listening in on some rumors and from what I can collect the show is going to be a live feed straight from Gabe’s office of him eating cheese burgers while playing half-life 3.

  6. This could also be used to promote Source Film Maker even further…and may even have an official SFM submission page, like upload directly from SFM and stream through Steam or a dedicated site. Youtube for SFM?

  7. I really like the idea of a Valve-made movie. They’ve certainly proven their worth as filmmakers with TF2 and a bit with Dota 2. I’ll sure be watching tomorrow. No spoilers until we’ve all had a chance to see the episode, k, Vic? /sarcasm

  8. Another Valve hype train? Choo choo!

  9. Maybe a film with Adult Swim

  10. God damnit. WHERES HALF LIFE 3.
