Steam Guard Now In Public Beta

“Already?”, I hear you ask?

Why, yes!

Steam Guard Now In Public Beta

Steam Guard, Valve’s new security feature which they announced no more than 2 days ago, is now in public beta.

That means you (and your dog, of course) are free to install a Beta update, which will allow you to experience the miraculous qualities of Steam Guard!

It might seem like it does nothing at first, but we here at LambdaGeneration have already taken the time to ensure the Beta client includes these new features.

Yes, David, one of our best contributors (or interns, so we can sound cool like all the other gaming blogs) bravely gave (well, more like sacrificed, really) me his account details, so that the community can know their account is safe and sound!

Steam Guard ties your e-mail directly to your account, and your account directly to your PC. Or something. Whenever someone tries to log in from an unrecognized PC you used to create your account, a special authorization code will be sent to your e-mail.

You will also be notified of any login attempts occuring from PC’s that haven’t been authorized yet.

Entering the beta is simple:

To opt into the latest Steam client beta and begin protecting your account with Steam Guard, launch the Steam client and visit Steam Settings’ Account tab, then changing your beta participation to “Steam Update.”

We’ve also got details on how Intel’s IPT system will interface with Steam Guard:

In addition to email-based authentication, Steam Guard will soon offer other forms of secondary authentication, such as Intel® Identity Protection Technology, a hardware-based security feature available with the new 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ and Core™ vPro® processors. With IPT, secondary authentication is effortless, as it is provided by the chipset itself.

Awesome! Your Steam account will soon become the Fort Knox of Steam accounts. In a sea of other Fort Knox-like Steam accounts.

Let us know what you think of this beta in the comments.
