IGN’s Top 100 Modern Video Games – Featuring Quite A Few Valve Games

News & Rumors Other

Gaming sites love to do these things. Top 100, top 50, or what have you. Most of the time, you can count on these lists being a bit… odd. But you can almost always count on finding a Valve game nestled in there, sandwiched between a couple of cover shooters and some bothersome war shooter.

IGN’s Top 100 Modern Video Games – Featuring Quite A Few Valve Games

And this is IGN’s Top 100 we’re talking about – their top 100 modern video games. And by modern they appear to mean “nothing that came out earlier than 2005”. There are a ton of games on this list, many of which you might not have heard of, so we’ll skip straight to the important stuff.

The first Valve game on this list is Team Fortress 2, at #27. It seems to be pretty high on the list, but then again you look further up and notice that it got beaten by Gears of War and Call of Duty 4. The next one is Left 4 Dead 2, at #17. A good choice by IGN – in terms of gameplay, L4D2 does come out on top of its predecessor. So that’s pretty high up, isn’t it? Well, sort of, but it got outranked by Halo: Reach, of all games.

Next is Half-Life 2: Episode Two, at #12. A strange choice – while EP2 is, arguably, the finest the HL2 formula has to offer in terms of gameplay, I’m sure anyone would pick Half-Life 2 instead. Pretty high up on the list, but again, it’s beaten out by some pretty odd choices, like Fallout 3 and Uncharted 2.

And the last Valve game on the list is Portal 2, at #5. It’s outranked by a few other peculiar choices, but then again, number 5 is good enough, and hell, it’s their list. Overall, it’s not that bad a ranking, but we do wish some games were a bit higher on the list.

And thanks to Riku for the tip.

    what.

  3. Gon’t worry too much, IGN has always been wrong in everything.

  4. your not the only one who thought this list was disappointing Amy. the whole ign page was full of negative comments.

  5. L4D2 > TF2 ?? 0_o omg

  6. How could they possibly put L4D2 over the original game? I know it’s a matter of opinion, and here you have mine, mister.

    • In terms of gameplay, it’s not unreasonable to place L4D2 above L4D. It’s simply the better game. Evidently, in terms of story, atmosphere and art style, L4D1 comes out on top, but at the end of the day, when it comes to L4D, it’s the gameplay that matters. I don’t entirely agree with that choice, but I can see the reasoning.

  7. This list is dissapointing. D:
