Black Mesa: Source; Cry of Fear; No More Room in Hell; Have All Been Community Greenlit For Steam Distribution

Praise be to the Steam business development team, for they have blessed us all with some of the greatest news I’ve heard all year: among the first 10 games to pass through the Steam Greenlight crowd-sourced selection system are three amazing total conversion mods based on Valve’s games. The mods in question, which will soon be released officially on the Steam Store as free downloads are:

  • Cry of Fear, an incredible survival horror experience built on the GoldSource engine.
  • No More Room in Hell, an excellent co-op zombie survival game built on Source.
  • And, of course, the long-awaited Black Mesa: Source, an incredible reimagining of Valve’s first ever: Half-Life 1.

The most important thing worth mentioning here is that none of these games had gotten past the 50% voting mark, let alone the 100%. Black Mesa was on 49%; NMRIH was on 30%; while Cry of Fear was at 15%.

So what does this mean? Well, it means that my concerns, doubts, and worries, which I previously expressed in our article regarding Greenlight’s reveal, have all been shattered. And that’s actually great.

It’s really, really great to finally see Valve fully embracing their own modding community yet again, just as they used to in the old days (I was starting to get worried, quite frankly). Furthermore, simply having such great experiences available freely on the Steam Store is just amazing in itself, and I’m really happy all the hard work these dedicated modders have poured into their creations has finally paid off.

As a sinister, sociopathic artificial intelligence once said: it’s hard to overstate my satisfaction. Whoever made this decision is a saint on Earth, and should get their own country. Then again, they work at Valve, and that’s kind of a reward in and of itself.

In any case, this holy trinity, along with the other 7 greenlit games, will be moved to the Greenlit section of Steam Greenlight, where they will stay until they are officially released on the Steam Store, as free downloads (although some of the other 7 greenlits will obviously be paid games). Some of them are still months away from release, while others will be released very soon.

As we all know, Black Mesa is now only 3 days away from release, so let’s hope it will launch directly onto Steam. Both CoF and NMRIH have already been released previously, so hopefully it won’t take too long for them to reach the Store as well.

All 10 greenlit projects were in the top 11 most-rated projects on Greenlight (mysteriously, Slender: Source, which was the second most-rated project, has not been greenlit as of yet). And just in case you’re curious, the other 7 greenlit games are:

  1. Slender: Source (now Faceless) will be added to the next Greenlit batch, I think. The developers had trademark issues.

  2. At least 3 hours for the release of Black Mesa Source… I thinking with numbers and i concluded that the game will be launched at 10:46 AM

  3. I have one question: Will the mods still be free? Because you know, the devs had to pay to get on steam greenlight, right?

  4. I feel, because of how games are chosen to be greenlit, they should change it from the current progress indicator to something like a counter of how many people have voted for a game.

Anyway, I am really glad Black Mesa got greenlit! Really hoping it gets released on Steam Friday!

    • Yeah, thou, I think the Steam release will be made later.. I mean if they plan to have all the features they say wanted to have on steam, like Mac support(they will need to port the game to Source 2009) and Steam works (achievements, cloud, stat tracking, etc) those things will take time and playtest hours to make sure they didn’t broke something else in the way, but they may release it as a mod first and later on update it with those features.

      • No, Mac support is not on their agenda. They will most likely be staying on Source 2007 for the foreseeable future, and I would imagine porting and rebuilding the mod onto Source 2009 would take a lot more manpower and effort.

        • Actually I remember them saying that porting the mod to newer Source branches is easy for them and that they have already gone through more than one such port and that they would port to a newer branch as soon as the code is available.
So I don’t think that porting from 2007 to 2009 requires so much effort.

          • They probably said that a long time ago. Right now, I’d say it’s a different story – but in any case, the prospect of Steam distribution may have some pretty significant consequences for the mod’s future. We’ll see how it all develops.

  5. Heads up; Source 2007 code leaked

  6. Im very happy and surpriced that BM:S will be going to be on Steam, but Im also very exited that Cry of Fear, a HL1 mod will be avariable too, it will be the first HL1 mod to be in Steam and hopefully it will bring some updates to the Goldsrc engine, steamworks maybe? achievements? Mac support? all of those would be great.
Im really looking forward to this new modding opportunities, hell, maybe we could even bring Sven co-op to Steam! I will sure as hell vote for that one!

    • I doubt the Steam release of CoF will bring achievements or Mac support, but it will obviously have Steamworks features. Considering the fact that it’s the first GoldSource mod to be distributed over Steam, it’s a huge step forward, and it’s going to be pretty great.
Good idea there! Having Sven Coop on Steam would be just amazing!

  7. I’m just dissapointed that Big Picture Mode isn’t compatible with Windows XP. I have a widescreen smartTV, so I would love to use it to play Black Mesa on. But beggars can’t be choosers, I guess…

  8. When you think about it, it’s kind of odd that people have been cheering and voting for games that hasn’t been released. Take Dream for instance, there’s not even a demo of it. And yes, you could say the same thing goes for BMS but hell, at least I know what I’ll get.

  9. This really put a huge smile on my face. Fingers crosses Black Mesa will make it onto Steam the the launch.
