City 17: Episode One Devs Release Assets to the Modding Community!

Modding & Development Source

Well, the holidays are finally over! It’s a new year and it’s about time to get back to reporting news…from last month. Better late than never I suppose. – You may remember a mod announced a couple years back called City 17: Episode One. If you don’t, feel free to check out their ModDB page. Since you’re clearly a mole person who’s been living under a rock. The developers strove to make a number of enhancements to the Source engine to offer a more visually enticing experience to compliment the mod’s atmosphere and nicely crafted gameplay.

City 17: Episode One Devs Release Assets to the Modding Community!

The sad news, unfortunately, is that this mod will probably never see the light of day says MrTwoVideoCards, one of the members of the team behind the project, Gear. However, the good news is that the team has stood by their word to release the assets they created to the Source modding community!

Recently (I may be stretching the definition of that word a bit here), MrTwoVideoCards posted a thread on Interlopers announcing the release of City 17’s resources, including particles and shader effects. As well as various test maps the team created to experiment with their new assets. But no, none of these maps are from the mod itself, so they don’t contain any major gameplay. They do, however, offer a look into how the assets are implemented and giving designers a pre-built testbed for experimenting with them as well.

While this news is great for the modding community – it’s nice to be able to use some new materials and shaders after Half-Life 2 mappers have been stuck with the same ones for nearly seven years – it is a shame that the mod itself will likely gather dust on a shelf somewhere…figuratively speaking. But not all is in vain; the developers are currently working on their own indie game, which I’m sure is certainly going to be one to look out for.

And on that note, I leave you with yet another awesome trailer…
