Combine OverWiki Needs Your Help!

News & Rumors Other

A long time ago, some guy looked at Wikipedia and went “I wish we could have this for Stargate”. And thus, the fan wiki was born. Focusing on one topic, and one topic only, these wikis are essentially online encyclopedias for… well, whatever you want. Obviously, this is perfect for a video game with an universe as rich as Half-Life’s. In fact, there’s been lots of Half-Life wikis in the past. Some have died off, some are still alive. But the most successful one is, by far, the Combine OverWiki, which is currently hosted on Wikia.

Unfortunately, Wikia is not very good for… well, pretty much anything, I suppose. Advertisements, forced skin changes that break wikis, and so on, and so forth. Many fan wikis have moved to other locations, such as the Official Team Fortress Wiki, and some have simply avoided Wikia outright, such as the new Portal Wiki. And now it’s the OverWiki’s turn to get the hell out of there. But not so fast – they could use your help!

Combine OverWiki Needs Your Help!

As you know, web hosting ain’t that easy. I have no idea how we get by ourselves – must be all the money we got selling those diamonds back in Kosovo. Actually, I’ll shut up about that, because the Interpol still wants to talk to us about that problem with the destroyed… nevermind. So, yeah. Web hosting can be a problem if you didn’t go to Kosovo for a couple of years. And that’s just what’s going on at Combine OverWiki: they underestimated the costs for a robust web hosting system that you actually need for a wiki. Don’t look at me like that! If it wasn’t for those diamonds, we’d probably have the same problem right now. For them, the problem is about memory. A wiki gets a lot more traffic than your average website, so you need something better for your web hosting. You can’t just cheap out, or the thing will crash on launch day.

So they need some help, in the form of donations. Even if you’ve only read the OverWiki a couple times, or if you’re one of the active editors there, I’m sure we can all agree that it is a great wiki. Every penny counts here, and you’re making a difference by donating. They won’t throw your money away either – all of it will be going to payments for the web host server.

Do you want to donate? Well, I know I do. You can donate here, at PayPal, or here, at ChipIn. And you can find out more, here, on their Facebook page.
