“I’d Have Done the Same Thing” – Garry’s Mod Creator Says

The selling of the popular title Minecraft has taken the internet by storm this week. While there has been mixed feelings about this, Garry’s Mod creator, Garry Newman, said he would have done the same thing.

“I’d Have Done the Same Thing” – Garry’s Mod Creator Says

Many internet users have ill feelings towards software giant Microsoft, which is why they may have concerns about the take over. Garry Newman, the creator of popular titles Rust and Garry’s Mod doesn’t share the ill feelings others have, as he discussed in a blog post.

Long story short. I’d have done the same thing. The money is enough to very much take care of all the staff. The game is in relatively safe hands. Mojang’s legacy is as a huge success story instead of a one hit wonder. Everyone wins. Can you seriously say you’d have done it differently?

Furthermore, he went on to say,

Whether or not Minecraft itself is “f****d” because it’s owned by Microsoft is debatable. I’m sure Microsoft didn’t just buy it because they’re struggling desperately to stay relevant and some of their kids play it a lot. But even if they did it really isn’t in their favour to pay a shitload of money for it and then completely f**k it up. That wouldn’t make any sense. Time will be the judge on that, I guess.

This certainly sheds light on Garry’s thoughts. His own famous game, under his own name, started out as a small Source mod. Only recently has the total numbers of sales for the game passed 6 million copies.

Since releasing Garry’s Mod, Garry Newman has been working and managing his next project with a team at Facepunch Studios called “Rust”. Interestingly related, he had this other snip to talk about,

Once you start hiring people your whole attitude changes. You’re not just f*****g about with your life anymore.. you’re f*****g about with other people’s lives – and the lives of their families. You can’t just sell out and f**k everyone over. Companies like Blitz that go bust, don’t pay people what they were owed, let 175 staff go, then started up under another name almost straight away. Those are the guys you don’t want to be. I am sure more than the top guys at Mojang became very financially rich due to this deal and that’s something that should be admired – not seen as a bad thing.

Do you think that should have been expected from Garry? What are your thoughts? Let’s hear them below.
