Thanks a new mod you can now play the original Half-Life with subtitles.
“Half-Life: Subtitles Mod” was only just released in July this year and enables you to play though the original Half-Life with subtitles, just like in Half-Life 2.

An animator known as Tim Hijlkema recently uploaded an amazing short film that reimagines scenes from a list of 15 popular video games, including Half-Life, Left 4 Dead and even spin-off Source mod The Stanley Parable.
Recently, GoldSrc speedrunner “quadrazid“, previously famous for his 20 minute Half-Life 1 speedrun, uploaded a video of what he calls “Half-Life Backwarding”, which is exactly what it is.
In the short video, quadazid attempts to make his way through various Half-Life levels such as the Hazard Course as fast as he can, but this time facing backwards.
If you thought normal Half-Life speedruns are crazy enough, then this has just taken it to a whole new level.
Many of us will have played through most of Valve’s titles and enjoyed them. When we’re wrapped up in the action or the story however, the rules of the game we’re playing are almost invisible to us.
As a level designer it often pays to take a step back and look at the purpose of the content of a level. Why things are placed where they are, what do they add to the gameplay and what can we learn from them.
It has been over 15 years since Valve developed the GoldSrc engine. As a result of this, and the subsequent release of the Source Engine in 2004, there is an insane amount of community-created maps and mods out there, each showcasing amazing talent, ability and creativity.
We haven’t featured many modding projects yet on our weekly ‘Community Spotlight’ feature, so when it came to choosing a single project to feature, it was a difficult decision. However, even after completing so many different maps and mods over the years, there are always certain projects that stand out and Focalpoint by Dimitri Vujicic is certainly one of those.
Despite the age, Half-Life is a game that many set their sights on, mainly for the challenge that is speedrunning. You know, the thing where people try to beat a game as fast as humanly possible, with or without scripts. And loads of bunny hops and grenade jumps. Loads of ’em.
Using a mod that restores Half-Life to its original 2001 version, a group of people has after 4 years of preparation and practice managed to beat the world record speedrun of 27 minutes, with a whopping 20 minutes and 41 seconds clear time.
The Hiatus is over! Fanart Friday is back. Yes, after a busy Holiday Season and a rocky start to the New Years, Fanart Friday has returned for the fourth go. Let’s begin…
Half-Life is now fifteen. Ok we already known that by now, right?
Throughout these 15 years the game has attracted quite a vast array of artists throughout many forms of artistic efforts. Half-Life has a very creativity community. As a result, there has been an overload of Half-Life fan-art and creations that has and is still being produced after all these years. Don’t believe us?
We wanted to share with you some of the amazing artwork and creativity from around the community that caught our eye over the past fifteen years. Like in all of our other compilations from our 15 Years of Half-Life celebration, we cannot cover everything under the sun and we have very likely forgotten or have not seen many other amazing things too. Please feel free however to remind us!
Today we’re going to take a look back at some of the best, most iconic pieces of film and multimedia inspired by the Half-Life universe. As you may imagine, there has been an amazing amount of fan-created productions over the years. As much as we’d love to cover everything, we could not pack anything near the amount of stuff that exists into a single article (and we would probably burn out all of the content we have been wanting to share in this section for years ahead!). There are probably a lot of things that have been sadly lost or forgotten online too. Anyhow, here is a list of a few of the memorable fan-produced films, machinimas, series and other multimedia created since Half-Life’s release in 1998. Enjoy!
The year is 1998. A previously unknown group of game developers known as Valve Software has just released Half-Life. Of course it becomes an instant hit, entertaining a generation of gamers worldwide. But beyond that, buried away on the CD-ROM inside that ridiculously big cardboard game box is a program called “Worldcraft”. According to a note at the back of the instruction manual (remember those?) this program would allow fans to “create a replica of their garage or a fantastic alien world”. And create they did. With this tool, now known as Hammer, at their disposal, the possibilities have been almost endless. From Counter-Strike to Ricochet, from Black Mesa to deep space to World War II France, the community created a tidal wave of new adventures, far beyond what anyone might have anticipated. Fifteen years later, we show no sign of stopping.
